Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
