The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.
